DEDICATION
In the future years when we look back on
our high school days, we will have many
fond memories. Among them a great
teacher will stand out because of his strong
devotion to youth.
We shall never forget his classes where we
were taught to love geometry as he did.
He also shared with us his many interests,
including Amos Alonzo Stagg, Gerry Geis-
ler, Steinmetz, and The Lady of the Lake.
We will remember him as a friend to all.
Although he was one of the busiest men
we knew, he always found time to treat us
as individuals. He was always willing to
help everyone.
Because of his great ability to serve as a
teacher and friend to youth, the Senior
Class, with deep admiration, dedicates the
1964 Torch to Mr. Donald H. Randall.
At
IN MEMORIUM
On November 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy was shot while traveling
in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. As the stunning word flashed
around the globe, people great and small simply stopped and
stared in disbelief. First came tears, then halting words. Reporters
stopped people on the streets to see what their reaction was to the
death of their president. A college student felt "as if the end of the
world had come, and you are not prepared for it." Others said,
"Your thoughts just don't work at a time like this." In almost
every country there was mourning. People wept, prayed, stood
silent in the streets, or lit torches to parade sadly through the
night. Americans learned how many people of other lands respected
Kennedy, and the loss that they felt was the loss of one who seemed
to them a personal friend as well as a world leader.
The reason why the shock was so great was that when one heard
the news he felt suddenly so empty; it was the most unexpected
thing that could be imagined. It was the least likely thing to
happen to the world. That Kennedy should be the one, well,
we just didn't believe in assassination any more, not in a civilized
world.
Another reason why the shock was so great on American people
was the extraordinary sense Kennedy gave of being alive. No one
had such vitality of personality. Following his death, many of his
speeches were recorded and sold throughout the country, along
with books of his life and the tragedy of his death. People from
all over the country bought these books and records to keep in
memory of him.
No one will ever forget November 22, 1963. They will remember
where they were when they heard the shocking news, and how
they stood in disbelief of that terrible tragedy that happened in
Dallas.

SENIOR CLASS ADVISOR
Mr. Arthur Hand
SENIOR CLASS ADVISOR
Mrs. Harriet Nathanson
Now we are Seniors and on the very threshold of life. As
we look ahead we look ahead we often fail to look 'back
and recall the events that are now memories. Behind us
are six long years, years of hard work mixed with many
good times.
Who would ever think that we are the same group that
entered Silver Lake in 1958. Feeling very small and con-
fused, we groped our way around until we finally got the
room numbers straight. This year many lasting friendships
were formed, both in class and at the frequent dances put
on by the Junior High.
We entered the eighth grade with a little more self-
confidence and the pleasant feeling of having successfully
come through our first year at Silver Lake. We were
beginning to feel more a part of the school and a little
excited about the coming year, when we would be fresh-
men.
As freshmen we were in. for a few surprises. One was the
feeling of again being at the bottom of the ladder. This
disappeared as we became active in clubs and sports and
found that the life of a freshmen is not as hard as it
it seemed. Another surprise was the mad rush we were
thrown into between classes, quite different from the single-
file of the Junior High. After the first rush of panic we
began to enjoy it. Our money-making project was the sale
of Silver Lake sweatshirts, and it was quite successful. We
also had our own squad of cheerleaders to cheer on the
freshmen teams. This year our officers were president,
Kenneth Davis, vice president, Richard Arruda, secretary,
Mary Reed, treasurer, William Gould, and historian,
Catherine Harkins.
We began our sophomore year with the sale of pins. On
November 4th, we put on a dance to try to build up our
treasury for the coming year and the prom. This year we
tackled such subjects as biology, where we disected worms
and peered into the microscope; geometry, where we tried
to sort out and remember the numerous axidms and
postulates; and Modern European History, where many
students kept finding themselves in "Siberia." In the spring
CLASS HISTORY
a long awaited moment arrived when we ordered our
class rings. This year our officers were, president, Jerald
Hogan, vice-president, Richard Arruda, secretary, Mary
Reed, treasurer, Bonnie Wheeler, and Historian, Catherine
Harkens.
Then we became Juniors and a step closer to graduation.
This year the big event was the Junior Prom, and prepara-
tions for it began early in the year. As we painted yards
of red stripes and scavenged for flowers, we began to
wonder if we would ever finish in time. After long hours
we did finish and "An Evening in Paris" was tres maifique.
The highlight of the evening was the Grand March and
the announcement of the queen, Debbie Bates, and her
court, Ingrid Krueger, Julie McClelland, Virginia Glass,
Cheryl Joubert, Linda Nickerson and Dale Souza. Follow-
ing the prom we drove through the pouring rain for a
delicious midnight dinner at Eugene's. The rain didn't
dampen our spirits, however, and a good time was enjoyed
by all. Our Junior class officers were president John Mc-
Cann, vice-president Georgianne Doody, secretary, Mary
Reed, treasurer, Bonnie Wheeler, and Historian, Catherine
Harkens.
Finally we were Seniors and graduation seemed only a
step away. The year began with the election of class officers.
They were president, John McCann, vice-president, Robert
Stewart, secretary, Mary Reed, treasurer, Bonnie Wheeler,
and historian, Catherine Harkens. The Senior Class Play,
"Ladies of the Jury," was a great success, though the spirit
was somewhat saddened by the tragic death of the presi-
dent, John F. Kennedy. In December there were college
boards, applications, and the beginning of long periods of
anxious waiting. With midyear exams we realized that the
year was half over, and we would soon be leaving.
Now we have reached the end of our years at Silver Lake.
For many there is sadness, though it is mixed with expecta-
tion of new experiences and new opportunities to come.
Ahead is a new life; a door is soon opening for us, the
door to the future.

JUNIOR PROM 1963
May 10, 1963 is a date we will all remember. As
we walked through the door of the gym we were
transported to the gay streets of Paris, the town
of romance. And romantic it was with the soft,
misty lights, the little tables nestled under the
striped canopy, and the twirls in their beautiful
gowns, dancing with their dates to the dreamy
music of the band. The prom was followed by a
late dinner at Eugene's and early morning breakfast
parties.
The Junior Prom will be among the fondest
memories of the Class of 1964.

SENIOR CLASS PLAY
LADIES OF THE JURY
"Order, order. Mr. Pressley, you can't do that!"
"Now my dear Mrs. Crane . . ."
These are a few of the lines that could be heard echoing through
the Little Theater as the class of 1964 presented senior class play,
"Ladies of the Jury."
The play, directed by Miss Margeson, presented on December 4
and 5, after being rescheduled from November 22, the day of the
death of John F. Kennedy. It was a big success and was enjoyed
greatly by both the cast and the audience. "Ladies of the Jury"
was indeed an event that few seniors will ever forget.

The purpose of the Silver Lake chapter of the National
Honor Society is to encourage the student body to seek the
ideals of Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service.
Under the leadership of president, Robert Randall, the
society has accomplished much and upheld its ideals during
the past school year.

The Student Council has had a full year. The success of the store and the vending
machines enabled the council to continue its Achievement Awards and scholarship
program.
Before Christmas, the council held a Sadie Hawkins Dance, which reversed the
customary practice of boys asking girls. Jim Chupaila was chosen king of the dance.
Under the capable guidance of Mr. Binns and Mrs. Lootz, the council was able
to run smoothly throughout the year.

Silver Lake High's varsity football team enjoyed its most successful season since the
establishment of the school and the team. A strong contingent of seniors was the
mainstay behind our hard-hitting defense and our potent offense. Led by our co-
' captains Jim Chupaila and Jim Desnoyer, they compiled a seven and two record.
V The team and school were especially proud to have our coach, John Montosi,
elected "Coach of the Year" in the Southeastern conference. We are equally proud
of our other coaches, Mr. Girourd, Mr. McAleer and Mr. Carnathan. ,
